Succulent Maintenance

Echeveria (Summer Type) — Care Guide 🌵

Echeverias are drought‑adapted succulents that thrive in bright light, dry air, and fast‑draining substrates. They reward careful growers with tight rosettes and vibrant color when given two essentials: perfect drainage and complete dry‑outs between waterings.

📊 Botanical Profile

  • Adaptations: Water‑storing leaves, protective farina (wax), short internodes under high light.

  • Habitat: Often found in gravel plains or rock crevices with instant runoff.

  • ID Tips: Note leaf texture, farina, margins (teeth/areoles), windowed tips, or ribs. Label hybrids clearly in cultivation.

☀️ Light & Temperature

  • Indoor: PPFD 150–400 (≈12–35k lux).

  • Outdoor (acclimated): PPFD 400–800 (≈30–70k lux).

  • Etiolation: PPFD <120 for 2+ weeks.

  • Sunburn risk: Unacclimated PPFD >700 + still air.

  • Temp range: 15–28°C optimal. Brief tolerance 0–5°C (dry) / 35–38°C (with airflow).

  • Dormancy: Triggered above ≈30°C.

  • Recommend: 6–10h bright light + cross‑breeze. Shade + fan during heat spikes.

💧 Watering & Substrate

  • Mix: 60–90% mineral (pumice/perlite/lava), 2–6mm grain, pH 6.0–7.2.

  • Watering: Soak thoroughly → wait for 100% dry‑down (check weight/skewer).

  • Pots: Shallow, breathable clay/plastic with large drainage (+ side holes if possible).

  • Tip: Top‑dress to keep crown dry and prevent wicking.

🌱 Fertilization & Growth Rhythm

  • Feed: ¼‑strength balanced/low‑N fertilizer only in active growth. Avoid cool/wet media.

  • Rhythm: Lengthen dry cycles during rest; resume light water with new growth.

  • Inert mixes: Occasionally add micronutrients; flush to prevent salt burn.

✂️ Propagation

  • Cuttings: Callus 2–10 days → place in coarse, barely moist media under gentle light (PPFD 50–120).

  • Seed: Surface‑sow on sterile fine mineral; cover lightly; keep 18–24°C.

  • Offsets: Detach cleanly, dust cuts, dry, plant shallow to avoid rot.

🔍 Quick Diagnostics

  • Faded color → Increase PPFD/daylength gradually.

  • Leggy growth → More light; less N; cooler nights help.

  • Soft/rotting leaves → Stop water ↑ airflow; repot into mineral mix.

  • Black crown → Unpot, cut rot, dry 5–7 days, re‑root shallow.

  • No flowers → Increase seasonal light difference + cool nights.

  • Cuttings not rooting → Ensure full callus; keep media barely moist & warm (20–24°C).

  • Brown leaf tips → Flush salts; moderate light/heat exposure.

  • Pale new growth → Light micronutrient supplement.
